Down on the FARM!!

So, this is the life on the farm!! This particular event is what they call "doctoring the cows" and it happens twice a year! The last time I was on the farm for it was when I was DATING Brady - and I had to act very interested - which resulted in the marriage proposal, ring and hey I haven't really been back since!! As you read on - you will see why!!

The kids are enjoying the baby calves - they even
have them cornered w/little effort!!!

This is the "doctoring" part! That is Brady's back and his brother is there also. They cage in the baby calf and give him his shots - we do the same w/our kids! (Brady always compares us to cows - "when our cows are calving" is what he always tells me as I am having a baby - yea, thanks!!)
If you are an animal rights activist, please stop reading here!!
After the shots, they cut the ear for the 2nd form of I.D. They also cut out the "man parts" of the baby boy calves - Rocky Mountain Oysters anyone??!! - and then they brand the cow. That is the worst part because of the smell - it's worse than my burnt cooking!!!

The calves beller and cry through the process - apparently it was too much for Sadie to see or hear!! She has her hands tight over her ears and won't even look up to see what is going on!! Maybe she thinks she'll be next.

The calf is then let loose and is done for life. Sadie gives him/her? a pet and all is well. This one is actually BEFORE the whole process so this calf has no idea what is coming!

So, that is the life on the farm - for the cow and the farmer. If you are ever interested in coming we can provide front row seats and even hands-on experience!!! Just remember you are in the corral so watch out for the cow pies!!

Ugh, that's nasty business. However, it's nothing compared to the ole preg-testing nastiness. Now that is disgusting!

Y'know I think I'm good, I don't believe I'll be visiting the farm on THAT day!

Well all I have to say is that you are better than me. I have never been involved in doctoring the cows and have no intention of becoming so.

I will admit I did go to buckhorn and help change the wheel lines once when I was dating Jason. It's a good thing they have pivots now, because they don't even have to go anymore so I don't have to make excuses.

Ya, thats about it! Great info. I agree the WORST part was the smell! Good thing for fabreeze! Your pics turned out great. I'm glad that they did not ask us to stay and help!

I can totally relate to how Sadie is feeling! I remember branding calves with my dad and crying because it hurt them! I still have a hard time taking my kids to get their immunizations!
